The President today announced that he will nominate Inez Smith Reid, of New York City, to be Inspector General of the Environmental Protection Agency.
Reid is Deputy General Counsel for Regulation Review at the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare.
She was born April 7, 1937, in New Orleans. She received a B.A. from Tufts University in 1959, an LL.B. from Yale University in 1962, an M.A. in political science from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1963, and a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1968.
In 1963-64 Reid was a lecturer in criminal law at the Ecole Nationale de Droit et d'Administration in Congo-Kinshasa. In 1964-65 she was an assistant professor of African studies and political science at the State University of New York at New Paltz. In 1965-66 she was a lecturer in political science at Hunter College in New York.
From 1966 to 1971, Reid was on the faculty at Brooklyn College, moving from instructor to associate professor of political science. She has been on the faculty of Barnard College, Columbia University, since 1971 and was on leave in 1972 and from 1976 to 1979.
From 1972 to 1976, she practiced law in New York City. From 1976 to 1977, she was general counsel of the New York State Executive Department, State Division for Youth. She has been Deputy General Counsel of HEW since 1977.
