Announcement of Intention To Nominate Paul Webster MacAvoy To Be a Member of the Council of Economic Advisers
The President today announced his intention to nominate Paul Webster MacAvoy, of Ipswich, Mass., to be a member of the Council of Economic Advisers. He will succeed William J. Fellner, who resigned in February.
Since 1974, Mr. MacAvoy has been with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Energy Laboratory, working with the energy policy studies group and has also been the Henry R. Luce professor of public policy. He was a senior fellow at Brookings Institution from 1970 to 1971. From 1969 to 1972, he was a member of the Council of Economic Advisers for the State of New York.
Mr. MacAvoy was an associate professor of Management (economics), Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1966, and became a professor in 1969. From 1965 to 1966, he was on leave from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and served as Senior Staff Economist for the Council of Economic Advisers. He was assistant professor of economics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1963 to 1966. He was assistant professor of Economics at the Graduate School of Business at the University of Chicago from 1960 to 1963. During that period he was a Ford Foundation faculty research fellow at the University of Chicago Law School from 1961 to 1962.
Mr. MacAvoy was born on April 21, 1934, in Haverhill, Mass. He received his A.B. degree in 1955 from Bates College and his M.A. degree in 1956 and his Ph. D. degree in 1960 from Yale University.
Mr. MacAvoy is married to the former Katherine Manning.
