Bloomberg Campaign Press Release - President Trump Has Vilified Latinos and Shown a Dangerous Disregard for Asylum Seekers; Mike Has a Plan to Help 11 Million Immigrants Gain Path to Citizenship, Expand Services and Support for Immigrants

February 05, 2020

NEW YORK — President Trump has a long history of vilifying the Latino community and has shown a dangerous disregard for Latino asylum seekers. Donald Trump has caged Latino men, women, and children seeking asylum from unsafe circumstances in their home countries. Children have died while in U.S. custody under his watch. He has repeatedly demonized Latinos in racist ads.

Further, Donald Trump rescinded the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) program that covered 800,000 young people. Creating a path to citizenship for DREAMers would end the threat of deportation and would save $60 billion in direct deportation costs, adding $280 billion in economic activity over 10 years. Additionally, Donald Trump's policies have contributed to an immigration court backlog of over 1 million cases, with over 50,000 immigrants in daily detention.

  • As president, Mike will restore DACA and work with Congress to protect millions of Dreamers and provide them a path to citizenship.
  • Mike's will also provide an earned pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants who agree to register, pay necessary fees and taxes owed, and pass criminal background checks, which will bring undocumented immigrants out of the shadows and could generate more than $100 billion in additional tax revenue over 10 years.
  • He will order an immediate review of Temporary Protected Status for those affected by Trump's actions, as well as for Venezuelans, then work with Congress to provide a path to citizenship for those who have established lives in the U.S.
  • Mike's administration will support the expansion of legal services for immigrants.
  • Mike will help more immigrants become citizens and clear the naturalization backlog, increasing resources and staffing at USCIS and limiting other barriers to citizenship.
Mike's full immigration policy will be released in the coming weeks.
