The fact is, Newt has a record. He has been involved in public life for over 30 years and has been on the national stage for most of it. We really do know what he thinks. He has good ideas and has enacted them into law. His signature Contract with America is one of the most successful pieces of Republican/conservative legislation in recent memory.
Alexander also points out Newt's work with Tea Party leaders throughout the nation:
Newt was one of the first big Republican names to reach out to the Tea Party movement in 2009. Most of the major figures in the Republican Party continue to keep the Tea Party at arm's length and mostly pay it lip service. For a long time they sounded more like Nancy Pelosi than Ronald Reagan.
