MILWAUKEE, WI – Fourteen hours after the first Republican presidential debate and the praise for Nikki Haley keeps pouring in. Here's what they are saying.
Emma Barnett, NBC News: NBC News organized a debate watch party at New England College with eight independent voters, ages 18-22. Seven of them lean Republican and one more to the left (but will be voting in the GOP primary). 8/8 of the participants thought @NikkiHaley won the debate tonight.
Lee Carter, pollster, Fox News: She had an outstanding night last night across the board. Republicans gave her an A, Independents a B, and Democrats a B. Many said that she was sort of a sleeper candidate, that she had an amazing night last night, really, really great answers last night on some very tough issues. This was one. Another standout moment was her answer on abortion. People really are going to be giving her a second look.
Washington Examiner: Republican debate: Nikki Haley claimed the spotlight among crowd of 'screaming men'
Jewish Insider: Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, showcasing a command of foreign policy, polished debate skills and even a willingness to tweak Trump, emerged as a leading contender to fill the role of top Trump challenger after Wednesday's debate at the Fiserv Forum. Haley torched Vivek Ramaswamy over his desire to withdraw support from Ukraine by accusing him of supporting America's enemies and threatening the global order. The former U.N. ambassador and South Carolina governor recounted Vladimir Putin's brutal war crimes, telling Ramaswamy he supported a murderer over a pro-American ally.
Matthew Continetti, New York Times: Haley made the most of her time before the cameras. She needed to remind G.O.P. voters that she was in the race, and why. She succeeded on both counts. And her answer on abortion proved that she is just as interested in winning the general election as the primary.
Hugh Hewitt: Do not make @NikkiHaley mad.
Josh Holmes, Ruthless: Nikki is not to be trifled with on foreign policy. Strong and confident stuff.
Iowa State Rep. Shannon Latham: Not sure why "much wasn't expected" but am glad @NikkiHaley is getting positive press. Ambassador Haley understands national security and is serious about securing the border. She's smart about education, too. #WomenforNikki
Brian Kilmeade, Fox and Friends: I think people are going to give Nikki Haley a second look.
Ainsley Earhardt, Fox and Friends: I thought Nikki Haley just knocked it out of the park with the debt, blaming Republicans and Donald Trump for the debt and saying it's time for an accountant in the White House.
Rebeccah Heinrichs, Hudson Institute, Fox News: Nikki Haley had a standout moment tonight on foreign policy tonight because the American people still want peace through strength.
Dana Bash, CNN: Let's talk about Nikki Haley. Because she really had several standout moments tonight. One of them was a bit surprising because... it was specifically going after the man she worked for, Donald Trump, and his, in her words, "his runaway spending."
Lanhee Chen, NBC News: I think Nikki Haley accomplished quite a bit tonight. I think she showed herself to be a credible general election candidate.
Chris Cillizza: Haley was poised and confident. She didn't seem eager to fight with her opponents but when the fight came, she was up for it. (She CRUSHED Vivek Ramaswamy on foreign policy — to the delight of the crowd.) To my eyes, she was head and shoulders better than the rest of the field.
John Avon, CNN: I think Nikki Haley had the best debate of the night... She was strong on foreign policy. She was someone who bridged the foreign policy of the Republican Party, and she went hard after Vivek on experience and it really left a mark. [She has it]. She's got it. Former South Carolina governor. UN ambassador. And somebody who is not, kind of, tip-toeing around Vladimir Putin as Donald Trump did and some of his acolytes do. I thought it was a great, strong moment for Nikki Haley last night.
Eliza Collins, Wall Street Journal: Haley, the only woman on stage, appeared to be appealing to independent and moderate Republican voters who have turned away from the party in the Trump era and cost the GOP elections.
NH Journal: Liz Preate Havey, a longtime Republican party official in the suburbs of Philadelphia, was at the debate, and she saw it, too. The only standing ovation of the night was when Nikki Haley went after Vivek as not being capable of handling foreign policy, Havey said.
Daniel Cohen, Newsmax: One of the fiercest exchanges occurred over Israel...Nikki Haley didn't hold back Wednesday night, slamming Vivek Ramaswamy in a debate on the FOX News channel. Haley said Ramaswamy was completely wrong to call for ending America's special bond with Israel and criticized his lack foreign policy experience.
Bret Stephens, New York Times: The star of the evening. Confident, prepared, sane and projecting the aura of someone who can win a general election.
South Carolina State Senator Tom Davis: I think Nikki Haley did extremely well. She showed herself to be someone who's not in over her head. She was very clear and articulate, I thought she had a lot of poise on that stage. I think that's what voters look at.
Governor Chris Sununu, CNBC: Nikki Haley especially really captured the moment. Nikki only had eight-and-a-half minutes of speaking time yet really took advantage of that, so you got to give her a lot of credit.
Fox News: Nikki Haley says Putin 'killed Prigozhin,' blasts Ramaswamy for 'choosing a murderer' over pro-America Ukraine
New York Post: Former US Ambassador and South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, 51, came to the Wisconsin stage in battle mode, the body language expert said. "She tensed her jaw as she spoke, demonstrative of her conviction. Her voice varied more than the other candidates, reflecting a range of nuanced feelings about the complex topics they discussed," he noted. Navarro also called Haley's clash with Ramaswamy over US aid to Ukraine one of the "highlights" of the debate. "It revealed her strong will, her passion and her years of experience," he mused. "Her body language told her opponents that she is not to be trifled with."
