The President today announced his intention to nominate Arnold Lee Kanter, of Virginia, to be Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs. He would succeed Robert Michael Kimmitt.
Currently Dr. Kanter serves as Special Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs and Senior Director for Defense Policy and Arms Control at the National Security Council at the White House in Washington, DC. Prior to this he served as Director of the National Security Strategies Program and as Associate Director of the International Security and Defense Program, 1985 - 1989. Dr. Kanter served at the Department of State as: Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Politico-Military Affairs, Deputy to the Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, and Director of the Office of Policy Analysis in the Bureau of Politico-Military Affairs.
Dr. Kanter graduated from the University of Michigan (B.A., 1966) and Yale University (M.Phil., 1969, and Ph.D., 1975). He was born February 27, 1945, in Chicago, IL. Dr. Kanter is married, has two children, and resides in McLean, VA.
