Out of Town Pool Report #7 Stern Biden quotes// rolling We're rolling at 11:45 am. Besides the debate news, Stern largely spent the interview asking Biden about his upbringing. Most of the anecdotes were from Biden's book. On his stutter: "I used to memorize the lines I was going to have to read because it was easier than looking at the paper," Biden said. Biden told the story about his mother confronting a nun who made fun of his stutter. "You ever speak to my son like that again I'll come back and rip that damn bonnet off our head, you understand me?" his mom told the nun. Biden talked about becoming a public defender in Delaware after MLK was assassinated. "I didn't think it was being noble I thought it was a way to fight back for" one of the largest Black populations in the country, Biden said. "A lot of them were cases where they weren't – I didn't think they rose to the level of being a crime they intentionally committed," Biden said. "You didn't get to choose what case you got." Stern asked about the period after Biden's first wife, Neilia, and 13-month-old daughter, Naomi, died in a car crash. "I used to sit there and just think I'm going to take out a bottle of scotch," Biden said. "I'm going to just drink it and get drunk." "I just thought about it, you don't need to be crazy to commit suicide," Biden said. "I thought let me just go to the Delaware memorial and jump," Biden said. He encouraged people to seek therapy. Biden said the VAWA was the "proudest thing I've ever done, took me years to get it done." On the Supreme Court: "It's a really extremely conservative court maybe the most conservative in modern history," Biden said. |
