In town pool report #1 - departure Biden took questions President Biden walked out of the South Portico at 10:21 am. Biden came and spoke to reporters at different points on the rope line. Your pooler could only hear a few questions and responses. Biden was asked why the US struck the Iran Revolutionary Guard Corps. Biden: "Because they struck us" Asked if the US will strike again, Biden: "If we have to." What are the chances if a Gaza ceasefire? Biden: "None. No possibility." Any update on hostages? Biden: "We're still optimistic." Your pooler will send another report with other answers. Marine One lifted off for Biden's trip to Illinois at 10:28 am. |

In town pool report #2 - departure - more Biden answers on polls, hostages, Angola Here are more answers Biden gave to reporters standing on the South Lawn during the Marine One departure. Biden was asked why people should be more concerned about abortion access than his age. Biden: "I don't think it's a comparable comparison." Question: Why do you think it is you're trailing Trump in all these swing state polls? Biden: "Because you don't read the polls. 10 polls. Eight of them I'm beating him in those states. Eight of them. You guys only do two, CNN and New York Times. Check it out. Check it out. We'll get you copies of all those other polls." Question: You don't think you're trailing in battleground states? Biden: "No, I don't." Question: Any update on the hostages? Asked if he would like to send a message to the Angolan people marking independence, Biden said: "Yes. They should be very proud. Very very proud. We are going to build on Angola. It's going to become one of the leaders in Africa." "We've got to get the economy more up to speed." Asked when he would meet Angola President João Lourenço, Biden said: "I don't know the time but I'm sure I'll meet him." Travel Pool Report #1: JBA Arrival Good morning from JBA. M1 was wheels down at 10:37 a.m. POTUS, wearing a blue suit sans tie, walked off at 10:38. Biden came over and spoke to the press briefly - please check against transcript. It was really hard to hear him. On the delay of hostages: "they're working on it." Did you ask for a three day pause for hostages "yes.. I've asked for a pause longer than three days" When asked if he's frustrated with Netanyahu, he said, "it's taken a little longer than I hoped" Biden said he is not worried about UAW endorsement when asked if he's going to ask Shawn Fain about it today. When asked about the potential government shutdown he said, " I wish the House would just get to work." We are on the small plane so apologies for delays due to bad service. We will be wheels up shortly. Travel Pool Report #3: rolling to event POTUS walked down the stairs of AF1 at 11:50 local time and shook hands with Governor Pritzker and other local officials. He was joined by Julie Su and members of the Illinois congressional delegation. Pool was stationed under the wing and could not hear their conversations. Travel Pool Report #4: Arrival in Boone County The motorcade arrived at the Community Building Complex at 12:19 p.m. Throngs of supporters and protesters lined the street leading up to the site. There was a handful of pro-Biden supporters next to Trump supporters. There was also a group calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, chanting "Genocide Joe" as the pool exited the vans. Travel Pool Report #6: speech ends POTUS concluded his remarks at 1:19 p.m. A few notes from the room: -Before he began speaking, POTUS put on a red UAW shirt to loud cheers from the audience -Just as started speaking, he was interrupted by a protester calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. The woman was quickly escorted out of the room as the crowd booed. -In the middle of the speech, a member of the member appeared to trip on the riser. Travel Pool Report #12: fundraiser POTUS entered the fundraiser at 5:01 p.m. and spoke behind a lectern, using a teleprompter. Please check quotes against the transcript. He began by thanking Gov. Pritzker: "The governor is as responsible in my opinion for my being behind this podium as anyone." "We're really looking forward to the convention" in Chicago He then discussed Tuesday's election night results: "Democrats had an incredible night once again," he said, despite all the predictions, listing off the victories in Kentucky, Ohio, Virgina, and Pennsylvania "The press has been talking about two polls ... there are 10 other polls we're winning," but said the NYT and CNN polls are the only ones people hear about. POTUS said the campaign put fliers on the seats that showed the other polls, though your pool did not see what the pages said. He then reassured donors they're not wasting their money on him, but quipped that he could still "screw up" "What happened on Tuesday is not unusual," he said. Biden said when he decided to go "toe to toe" with Trump: "We haven't stopped winning and he hasn't stopped losing ... This guy can' get tired of losing" On SCOTUS decision to overturn Roe: "They practically dared the women of America" and then said Trump is the "only reason" there are abortion bans in America When talking about the positive job growth under his presidency, he made fun of Trump, calling him "Donald Hoover Trump." Biden then retold the story of how the rally in Charlottesville insipired him to run for president in 2020 and how his grandchildren urged him to run again. POTUS: "I'm running again because we made progress but our democracy is still at stake... We still haven't united the country." Biden also retold the story of how he asked his brother and Jon Meacham to decorate the Oval Office and why they chose certain portraits. Biden then brought up recent stories from The Post and the NY Times about Trump's plans to use the presidency "for revenge and retribution." He said he was asking the nation "that political violence is never, never, never ever justified or acceptable" He continued this is "not your father's Republican Party," mentioning other Republicans like Howard Baker and Bob Dole that he worked successfully with in the past. "Maybe Donald Trump sees a dark and divisive future but I don't... I've never been more optimistic" about the country's future. POTUS concluded his remarks at 5:26 p.m and the pool was ushered out. The fundraiser was held in a gallery space with most guests seated and a handful standing around cocktail tables in the back. Spotted in the crowd: Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Toni Preckwinkle, former Gov. Pat Quinn.
