In-town Pool Report 2 — Gathering Pool is gathering for the POTUS update on hurricane response and prep |
October 8, 2024 11:18 EDT |
In-town Pool 3 — Biden update on hurricanes/departure Pool entered the Roosevelt Room at 11:04. POTUS spoke for about 9 mins, addressing both the Helene response and Milton preparations. He called Milton a potentially "devastating" storm that could be one of the worst to hit Florida in 100 years, and urged anyone under an evacuation order to "evacuate now, now, now." "It's a matter of life and death," he said. Biden also said he spoke yesterday to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and said the gov has been cooperative and that he gave him his personal phone number. Asked if VP Harris had been helpful during the response, Biden nodded and said "yes." On the postponed trip to Germany and Angola, Biden said he still planned to go at another time and would be talking with the German chancellor today on the topic. We are gathering for departure, will send more details asap |

In-town Pool 4 — WH Departure POTUS emerged from the Oval at 11:23 wearing a blue suit, blue and yellow striped tie and aviators. He walked alone, trailed by a group of aides. He did not stop to talk with the pool, instead walking and at one point half-jogging over to a group of visitors assembled on the other side of the driveway. He worked his way down the rope line, fist bumping and briefly chatting with some of them, before boarding M1 at 11:25. After Biden stopped briefly to chat with the pilot, M1 took off at 11:29. In-town Pool report 5 — Fuller quotes/color on Hurricane Milton, Germany/Angola trip, DeSantis, misinfo More from POTUS' hurricane update. As always, please check against the transcript: The president was seated at a table and surrounded by aides, with other officials beaming in remotely and on a TV screen. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm sat to POTUS' left, and Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack was on his right. POTUS began speaking as soon as the pool entered the room, first confirming that he would not be going to Germany and Angola as planned. He said he would "work those out later" and that "I just don't think I can be out of the country at this time." "We're going to stay focused on what's ahead of us right now," he said, referring to Hurricane Milton and the ongoing Helene recovery. On MIlton, POTUS said it "could be one of the worst storms in 100 years in Florida" and that he's directed his team to do everything they can to save lives help communities before, during and after the extreme weather events, "and that's being done." POTUS said he's spoken to all the political leaders in the region, "some more than once" and has told them that anything they ask for they will get. He also said he's surged thousands of personnel across the southeast to deliver "every available resource as fast as possible." POTUS emphasized the danger of Hurricane Milton, warning that the storm surge could be "devastating" and reiterating that it could be the worst storm to hit Florida in over a century. Address airlines and other companies, POTUS called on them to "provide as much service as possible to accommodate evaculation and not engage in price gouging." "I urge everyone, everyone, currently located in Hurricane Milton's path to listen to local officials and follow the safety instructions," he said. POTUS took a few questions at the end. On the risk of political figures sharing misinformation, POTUS said: "If past is prologue, it's real." He praised the governors in storm-affected states for working with the administration, but on those who are spreading misinformation said: "Those who do it, do it to try to damage the administration. We can take care of ourselves," he said, but expressed concern about the impact that it could have on the ground. "It's unAmerican. It really is. People are scared to death. People know their lives are at stake, all that they've worked for, all that they own, all that they value." On travel to Germany and Angola, POTUS said "I still plan on going to Africa" and on a trip to Germany, that he would be talking with the German chancellor "to try to work that out." Asked about Gov. Ron DeSantis, POTUS said: "The governor of Florida has been cooperative. He's said he's gotten everything he needs." ... "There was a rough start in some places, but every governor from Florida to North Carolina has been fully cooperative and supporitve and acknowledged what this team is doing." Travel pool report #19 — remarks POTUS, with Casey by his side, began speaking at 7:00pm ET. The event is being held in an outdoor tent set up at a private home in the Philadelphia suburbs. There are roughly 50 people in attendance. Co-pooler Eli Stokols spotted Bruce Reed sipping a Yuegling at the back of the crowd (he only drank half). Biden concluded at 7:15pm Full quotes coming in a follow up report but highlights below. Biden likened himself to Casey in a number of ways, including how they both "married up." POTUS claimed that Casey is "one of the most effective, bipartisan" lawmakers in the country. "The vast majority of the mainstream economists are giving us credit for a fundamental shift" in the economy. Biden also thanked Casey for helping him "take on Big Pharma" before detailing his efforts to lower health care costs for American families. Near the end of his remarks, Biden brought up reporting from the new Woodward book about former President Trump sending Putin and Russia COVID-19 tests back in 2020 during a domestic shortage… "What the hell's wrong with this guy?" Biden on Casey… "he's a guy kids can look up to. Meanwhile, his opponent is in lockstep with Donald Trump" POTUS also touted his efforts to make China crack down on the export of fentanyl precursors "People in this tent know. The elections in Pennsylvania are always close. This one's no different" "There's no greater champion for Pennsylvania than Bob. There's no one I trust more" |

Travel pool report #23 — FULL QUOTES/wheels down AF1 touched down at JBA at 8:36pm ET. Taxiing into position for POTUS' return to White House... tktk Full quotes from the Casey event below: BIDEN: It's good to be almost home! I like not far from here, just across the line in Delaware, and it's good to be with family. That's what Pennsylvania and the Casey family are, they're family. That's a fact that indicates you are to be family. That's a fact. Matt and Stacey and your children. Thanks so much for hosting us... Look, we have something in common. We share a common lot, Bob and I. We both married way up [inaudible.] It's always great to see you... I also want to thank another great friend, Madeline. Dean. Madeline, you're out there somewhere. You know I'm the second Irish Catholic ever to be elected. When I go to Ireland, I can look like the t shirt, but they did all my genealogy. I think we're related, kid. You think I'm kidding. I'm not. Folks. It feels like Scranton again. I grew up in North Washington Avenue, the case equipment Wyoming, a few blocks away. Wyoming Avenue, a few blocks away. Whether it was church or conversation around the kitchen table, the Finnegan family, my grandpop was with the Tribune and he was — anyway, our families knew each other. You can define your mother and their father by a single word, integrity. Two of the most honorable people I've ever known. I — actually we're about the same age apart. His dad and me and me and Bobby. But it's not a surprise that Bobby is just like his family. A man of character, a friend who always has your back and leader who keeps his word. Like his dad, Bobby has always believed in public service and public trust, because there was a public trust, and where we grew up, just like many of you, you grew up with a basic value set. Bobby knows my mom taught me the same thing as he got taught, that you have to be a man of your word. Without your word, you're not a man. She said, everybody's your equal, but no one, no one is better than you, Joey. Courage lives in every heart, and one day it'll be summoned. Well I saw Bobby's father and mother summon that courage. I saw Bobby summon as well. Now Bobby knows what my dad taught me. No one's looking for a handout. Everybody just wants a fair shot, a way up, a chance. My dad taught me, and I mean it sincerely, he'd come home from work — our dinner table was a place to have conversation while we ate, and my dad used to say, and I'm not joking, he said, Joey, a job's about a lot more than a paycheck. It's about your dignity. It's about respect. It's about your place in the community. It's about being with your kid in the eye and say, Honey, it's going to be okay. And mean it — just a fair shot. Well, that's Bobby. That's Bobby and a leader of Pennsylvania you can always count. He fights for those core values. He understands the struggle and hopes of people in Pennsylvania, and he always stands up for working people. He takes on powerful special interests, just he's able to walk across the aisle and get all things done for Pennsylvania that he can working in a bipartisan way. Bob Casey is one of the most effective, most bipartisan senators in the entire country, and I've seen it throughout my career, especially in the last four years. When Kamala and I came to office, Bobby was supper determined to end the trickle down economics — the idea that the wealthy do very, very well a lot will trickle down to the ordinary middle class folks. But guess what? Not a whole lot ever ever trickled down to my dad's kitchen table. We're determined to grow this economy in a different way. Both from the middle out and the bottom up. That way, the wealthy still do very well, but everybody's got fighting chance. And if you notice, the vast majority of the mainstream economists are giving us credit for a fundamental shift. We have the best economy in the world. That's not hyperbole, in the world. For me and Bobby, it comes down to looking out — you know, what I actually call Scranton values — I come from Scranton — values versus Mar-a-Lago values. I'll give you one example. For longest time I've been trying to give Medicare the power to negotiate prescription drug prices. I did that when I was in Senator. I worked like hell, but we got it passed by a vote with Bobby's help. We finally took on Big Pharma. Big Pharma should be able to make money. I'm not suggesting they shouldn't, but Medicare is the only organization that could not negotiate drug prices. They could at the Veterans Administration negotiate lower drug prices. For example, seniors with diabetes, they need insulin. Well, it used to cost $400 a month. Now it cost $35 a month. You know how much it cost them to make it? $10 a month. Package it? $12 a month. Starting in January, seniors will have a total out of pocket prescription drug cost capped at $2,000 [inaudible]. This is not hyperbole. I can take you to any capital in the world, ou take a prescription you have here in the United States, chemically, whether it's Toronto, Berlin, wherever it is, I can get you that same prescription from the same company somewhere between 20, 60% less. That's not hyperbole, that's a fact. That is a fact, a fact. So you know, these expensive cancer drugs cost ten, twelve, 14,000 bucks a year. Well starting in January, seniors will not have to pay any more than $2,000 for their total drug costs. And by the way, our reforms not only save seniors money, they save all you taxpayers money. You know how much this little bill saves the American taxpayer, all of you? $160 billion. [inaudible]. They don't have to pay the exorbitant prices of inaudible. They pay what it costs them, what it costs the government to buy. Now we were told we couldn't get any of this done. But because of Bobby, we got it done. I can go on about Bobby and how he's doing everything he can to keep the economy strong for working people and middle class. You know, the middle class built this country. That's a fact. And you know, the fact is that unions built the middle class. I cut from the corporate state of Delaware. We have more major corporations registered in Delaware than every other state in the union combined. [inaudible] So I'm not anti business. I represented that state for 36 years. But things that this guy wants to do we're running against. I want to strengthen the Affordable Care Act, which Trump wants to eliminate. If you eliminate the Affordable Care Act, this is a fact, 100 million people with pre existing conditions would no longer get coverage. What would that cost the government? You know, I mean think about what it would cost the government if that were the case [inaudible]. Bobby's protecting Social Security and Medicare, which Trump wants to cut. Bobby is taking on corporate greed, what they call shrinkflation. I want everybody to make a fair price, but the idea that it's outrageous, snack companies think folks won't notice if they charge the same amount of money for fewer potato chips in it? No I'm not joking, that's going on They're taking advantage of the American people. One thing that angers me when that happens, is Bobby knows American people don't like being played for suckers. He's also fighting for the rights of workers who are organizing because when they do better, all workers do better. The entire country does better. I had when we did the — anyway, I won't bore you with all the details, but I had to check out one where more unions are coming [inaudible]. What's the effect on the average worker? Everybody's wages up, everybody's wages go up. He's committed to defending women's rights and voting rights and so much more, but he also critically [inaudible] that we lay out the stark contrast in choices. I don't care what your predilection is, politically. But did you ever, literally, not a joke — Did you ever study, see, think about a president who's been so unethical as this president has been? I'm not joking. You see what came out today? It came out today that in the middle of the pandemic, we were short on tests — we couldn't get tests of people. And by the way he handled the pandemic was a disgrace, a disgrace. Over a million people died. But guess what? Those tests that determined whether you had COVID were in short supply, so he called his good friend, Putin, not a joke, and made sure he had the tests. He had the tests. What the hell's wrong with this guy? I'm not joking. I'm serious. I'm being deadly earnest. Pennsylvania is the kind of place that climbs into your heart and never leaves you. Trust me, I know. I was born here, and I married a Philly girl. I may be Irish, but I'm not stupid. I married Dominic Giacoppa's daughter. You don't think I'm kidding — If I didn't root for the Phillies, I'd be sleeping alone for a long time. They think I'm kidding. At any rate, trust me, when I say Pennsylvania never left Bob Casey and Bob Casey never left Pennsylvania. It's part of who he is, but his opponent left Pennsylvania, and Pennsylvania sure as hell left him. His opponent doesn't seem to understand that, in Pennsylvania, money doesn't determine your worth. Money doesn't determine — I hope you make all the money you can. That's wonderful. Just pay your fair share of taxes like the rest of us do. It's okay by me, but money doesn't determine a person's wealth or standing. It's your integrity, your character, your honor, your sense of integrity, character, and honor. That's the base. That's the company he keeps. This guy. Bobby, stands up — by the way, other leaders of integrity, character and honor, Our great Vice President Kamala Harris. But also, this is the guy who — I'm going to say something self serving. When I left the Senate after 36 years, I was voted as the most — the guy who got more done crossing the aisle. I'm a partisan guy, I'm aDemocrat, but when things need to be done across the aisle, I shake hands. That's what this guy does. He gets more bipartisan things done. He's a man that kids can look up to. Meanwhile, his opponent is lockstep with Donald Trump, voted by the historic political historians as the most dishonorable president in American history. That's not hyperbole. Just read what he's saying, what he's doing. It's worth repeating. Bobby just said about his opponent. His opponent said the Supreme Court's overturning Roe v Wade made him very, very happy. He supports the most extreme ban with no exceptions for rape or incest. Not only that, as Bobby said, his opponent made a fortune investing millions of dollars in companies producing fentanyl in China that's causing an overdose epidemic of grave — And by the way, we're talking about more people dying from fentanyl than any other cause now. Think about that. Think about that. One of the things I'm doing, I've spent more time with Xi Jinping that any other world leader has, 96 hours alone. We're making it real clear. He's got to change the deal. He can't continue to provide the byproducts of fentanyl, the products that are in the fentanyl. This guy's supporting it. Folks, there's a fundamental choice this election, a choice between a true Pennsylvanian who sees Pennsylvania as a place that serves people, or a Connecticut hedge fund CEO who still lives in Connecticut and who sees Pennsylvania only as a place to run for office. Bob understands something his opponent doesn't. As I said before, Wall Street's a good — I have nothing against Wall Street, but Wall Street didn't build this country. The middle class built this country, and unions built the middle class. Folks, let me close with this. As you all know better — as well as I do. And by the way, I look out here, and I hate to hurt your reputation, but about a third of you are the reason why was in the Senate. You think I'm joking. You guys raised more money for me over the years when I was Senator — anyway, that's what Delaware is. The good people that were in Delaware's [inaudible] all DuPont and all red and — look, Bobby's racing in one of the most competitive Senate races in the country, and he's being — this guy's being massively outspent. People in this tent jnow, elections in Pennsylvania are always close. This one's no different. Yes, we need to elect Kamala and Tim as President, Vice President, but we also need to hold the Senate. Hold the Senate. We simply can't hold the Senate without reelecting Bobby Casey. That's just a fact. By the way, there's no greater champion for Pennsylvania than Bob. There's no one I trust more in the United States Senate than Bobby. Now we have to be champions for him, for the sake of the state, for the sake of our country. I know we can do this. I've never been more — I know I don't look older than 40, but I've been around a hell a long time. But I can say with absolute integrity and honesty. I've never been more optimistic about America's future than I am today. We have the strongest economy in the world. We're the only nation, from a historical perspective, that's come out of every crisis stronger than we went into that crisis. Look who the world looks to. We're the strongest military, not only recently, in the history of the world, not a joke, in the history of the world. We have the best workers in the world. When I went back to get all the chips being made overseas, to bring back home, I met with the president of Samsung. Now, South Korea is investing $15 billion in building a new manufacturing — anyway, and I asked him why he's doing it. He said because you have the most qualified workers in the world, and it's the safest place in the world to invest my money. We have the most dynamic scientists, and entrepreneurs and innovators. And again, that's not hyperbole. We have the best research universities in the world. And above all, we're the only nation in the world they say that emerges stronger from a crisis then we entered it. With Bobby's leadership we're doing it with a new playbook based on the old truths of our nation. Believe in America. Believe in the American people. We just need a shot. We have to remember who the hell we are. I'm being deadly earnest. We're the United States of America. There's nothing, nothing beyond our capacity, nothing, when we work together to get it done, and we're going to do it this time. So please elect him. We need him badly. God bless you all and may God protect our troops. |
