Pool Report 10/Biden talks

President Biden emerged from the White House residence at 4:41.

He spoke briefly to reporters, saying he talked with VP Harris but won't share what advice he gave. He said he was going to a granddaughter's birthday party and intends to watch the debate.

Harris seemed "calm, cool and collected," he said.

Biden said he's weighing restrictions on Ukraine’s use of US weapons and that it's his understanding that the US citizen killed by Israeli forces was shot accidentally as a result of a ricochet.

I'll have fuller quotes shortly.

Marine One was wheels up at 4:47.

Pool Report 11/Biden quotes

President Biden said before boarding Marine One:

"I'm going up to my granddaughter's birthday in New York, then we're going to watch the debate and tomorrow I'm doing 9/11."

"I've spoken to the vice president. She seems calm, cool and collected. I think she's going to do great. And I'm not going to tell you what advice I gave her."

Q: Will you leave restrictions on the use of long-range weapons by Ukraine?

Biden: "We're working that out right now."

Q: What's your reaction to the... Israeli admission that they probably killed the Turkish activist in the West Bank?

Biden : "[Inaudible] more detail. Apparently it was an accident, ricocheted off the ground and just got hit by accident. I'm working that out now."

Manhattan helipad

Sept 10, 2024

The motorcade arrived at 6:40 p.m. at 7th St. and 1st Ave. POTUS remained in the limousine until 6:49 p.m. when he emerged. Nearby people cheered him and he smiled and gave a wave. A few moments later, he was joined by his granddaughter Finnegan, whose birthday was yesterday. The two hugged and then went into Campagnola, which describes itself on its red awning as "a country restaurant." Presumably, this is the venue for the birthday party that POTUS mentioned before leaving the White House.

The road is blocked off and crowds are gathered behind barricades across the street taking photos. All the usual motorcade vehicles, police cars, firetrucks and so on are arrayed around the restaurant. It's a lovely New York evening, the sun is still out and the temperature is pleasant. Your pool will be holding at a nearby establishment with adult beverages.

Out of town pool report #8

New York

Sept 10, 2024

Some quotes from KJP's gaggle aboard AF1:

On POTUS and VPOTUS traveling to the three 9/11 sites tomorrow:

"We can only imagine the heartbreak and the pain that the 9/11 families and survivors have felt every day for the past 23 years and we will always remember and honor those who were stolen from us way too soon. We will continue to do everything in our power to ensure that an attack like this never happens again."

On other topics:

She noted that 50 million Americans have now gotten coverage from the Affordable Care Act, meaning that one in seven Americans has benefited, and said POTUS and VPOTUS would continue to defend the law.

She paid tribute to James Earl Jones. "His remarkable talents will not be forgotten," she said.

On the ceremony honoring the 13 service members killed at Abbey Gate in 2001:

"The president and the first lady grieve with the families and respect them and wish them to know that we will continue to do everything we can to support them and to honor their sacrifice."

On tonight's debate:

She said POTUS spoke with VPOTUS earlier today. "Obviously he wishes her luck. He’s very proud of her." She would not say what if any advice he may have given VPOTUS or if she asked for any.

On spending discussions, she warned of the possibility of "devastating cuts" and called on Congress to pass a CR. "This is the part of their job that is the easy part of their job. They could get this done, keep the government open, do it in a bipartisan way they’ve done it before. ... They should do their job."

On the killing of the American woman at a protest of West Bank settlements, she repeated much of what Secretary Blinken said earlier in the day.

"No one should be shot for attending a protest. No one should have to put their life at risk just to purely express their views. Israeli security forces need to make some fundamental changes in the way they operate in the West Bank including changes in their rules of engagement."

Two small corrections to Pool Report #7 -- the dateline should have been New York, not the helipad, and it should have said there are ambulances among the vehicles, not firetrucks.
