Press Release - Personnel Announcement

President George W. Bush today announced his intention to nominate two individuals and appoint one individual to serve in his Administration.

The President intends to nominate Carl T. Johnson, of Virginia, to be Administrator of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration at the Department of Transportation. Mr. Johnson most recently served as President of the Compressed Gas Association. Prior to this, he served as Special Assistant to Representative Amory Houghton of New York. Earlier in his career, he served as Director of Federal Government Relations at Corning Glass Works. Mr. Johnson received his bachelor's degree from Cornell University and his master's degree from The George Washington University.

The President intends to nominate Lieutenant General James B. Peake, U.S. Army (retired) of the District of Columbia, to be Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Dr. Peake currently serves as Chief Medical Director and Chief Operating Officer of QTC Management, Inc. Prior to this, he served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Project Hope. Earlier in his career, he served as Surgeon General and Commander of the United States Army Medical Command. Dr. Peake received his bachelor's degree from the United States Military Academy and his MD from Cornell University.

The President intends to appoint Jody L. Williams, of Utah, to be a Member of the Utah Reclamation Mitigation and Conservation Commission (Recommended by the then-Senate Majority Leader) for the remainder of a four-year term expiring 07/10/10.
