Readout of the Vice President's Call with Northern Ireland First Minister Peter Robinson and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness

Vice President Joe Biden spoke separately today with Northern Ireland First Minister Peter Robinson and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness to express strong U.S. support for political talks that began October 16th between the parties represented in the Northern Ireland Executive. The Vice President underscored the importance of open dialogue and constructive compromise to resolving differences among the parties and securing more effective governance and a brighter future for the people of Northern Ireland. The Vice President stressed that, as a supporter of the Good Friday and St. Andrews Agreements, the United States stands ready to assist the parties in whatever way possible. In this regard, the Vice President noted that Senator Gary Hart is now in Belfast as the Personal Representative of the Secretary of State, and is ready to play a direct, diplomatic role to facilitate the discussions.
