SGOTUS supplemental pool #1 The second gentleman entered a small auditorium at Takoma Elementary School in Northwest DC at 2:22pm. About 30 4th and 5th graders, per pooler's count, were spread out amongst six tables, which faced a stage with a projector screen. An Inflatable globe was set up on each table. Students were making "rockets" out of balloons at their tables as the second gentleman walked in. The projector screen, which showed slides about space when pool first entered, changed to read "Takoma Elementary School Welcome Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff." The principal of the school called the students to get their attention away from the balloons and to the second gentleman, who was standing at the front of the room. The principal briefly introduced SGOTUS, telling students a bit of background information on him. One student called him the "second man" when asked his title. The Second Gentleman spoke next, thanking the student for his new title. "When I go home and Kamala Harris, our vice president, asks me how my day was — which she will — I'm going to say I went to Takoma and I got a new name." SGOTUS pointed out that the students were so invested in their rocket balloons that they barely noticed when he walked in. "It's great to see you engaged. When we walked in, you didn't even look up because it meant you were really excited and interested in the work that you're doing at your tables. And that made us very happy because it's important to learn about science." "It's really good you're starting to learn about them now," he said of science, space and technology. SGOTUS noted that he was married to the "first woman vice president" and that she "does a lot of work on space." "She works with the Space Force and the Space Council and all these new, exciting things that are happening," he said. "And she's focused on how things that happen in space can make our lives down here on earth better." Second gentleman also noted that the VP's residence is the naval observatory. "And it's right here in DC. And it's a working naval base. And they have these two gigantic telescopes." "Hopefully one of these days you can visit as we often have school kids come and visit us," he said. "You should dream big, and you will dream big and will achieve lots of amazing things," he told the students. "Because I know that the president and my wife, the vice president, are building a world in which you really can do anything you want." Lieutenant General M. DeAnna Burt of the United States Space Force gave remarks next. The Second Gentleman then walked around to each table of students as they were finishing their balloon rockets. The kids then had a competition in teams, setting off their balloon rockets creations. Asked if they want to take a picture with the Second Gentleman at the end, the students cheered. "That's more like it," SGOTUS said of their energy. As they were taking the picture, SGOTUS asked if the students could say "Hi madam vice president" on video, adding he was going to show it to her tonight. They did. "She is going to love that," he remarked. SGOTUS then briefly took to the front of the room again to thank the students for having him. He then took a few pictures with school staff off to the side before exiting the auditorium at 2:55pm. Here is the information on today's event that the Second Gentleman's team originally sent out: At 2:30 PM ET, as part of Women's History Month, the Second Gentleman will meet with local students and discuss the importance of expanding opportunities for girls and women in STEM education. Mr. Emhoff will also participate in a science experiment and uplift the Biden-Harris Administration's Commitment to gender equity. Lieutenant General DeAnna M. Burt of the United States Space Force will also attend. This event at Takoma Elementary School will be pooled press. |
