Statement of Administration Policy: S. 4554 - Reproductive Freedom for Women Act
STATEMENT OF ADMINISTRATION POLICY
(Senate)
(Sen. Murray, D-WA, and 32 cosponsors)
The Administration strongly supports Senate passage of S. 4554, the Reproductive Freedom for Women Act.
For nearly 50 years, Roe v. Wade protected a woman's constitutional right to make deeply personal health care decisions and to control her own destiny. Women in every state relied on this fundamental freedom—and the broader right to privacy that has served as the basis for so many other critical rights and protections.
The loss of that right has been devastating. Today, more than 20 states have dangerous and extreme abortion bans in effect, some without exceptions for rape or incest. Women are being denied essential medical care, including during an emergency, or forced to travel thousands of miles out of state for care that would have been available if Roe were still the law of the land. Doctors and nurses are being threatened with jail time.
Abortion, contraception, and fertility services are under attack as Republicans in Congress refuse to protect nationwide access to this vital reproductive health care. Simply put, Republican elected officials' extreme agenda is putting women's health and lives at risk and unleashing chaos and cruelty across America.
The Administration will continue to work with Congress to defend reproductive freedom once and for all. The President and Vice President stand with the vast majority of Americans who agree that reproductive health care decisions should be made by a woman with her doctor—not by politicians.
