Statement by the Press Secretary on House Resolutions

September 30, 2005

On Friday, September 30, 2005, the President signed into law:

H.R. 2132, which extends through September 30, 2007, the authority of the Secretary of Education to waive or modify Federal student financial assistance program requirements to assist individuals or academic institutions affected by a war, other military operation, or national emergency;

H.R. 2385, which extends authority for the Department of Commerce to conduct the Quarterly Financial Report program from September 30, 2005, to September 30, 2015;

H.R. 3200, the "Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance Enhancement Act of 2005," which makes permanent the increase from $250,000 to $400,000 in the maximum benefit for Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI) and Veterans Group Life Insurance (VGLI);

H.R. 3784, the "Higher Education Extension Act of 2005," which extends programs authorized under the Higher Education Act of 1965 through December 31, 2005; and

H.R. 3864, the "Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Affected by Hurricane Katrina or Rita Act of 2005," which authorizes the Department of Education to waive certain requirements and reallocate grant funds returned to the Department in order to assist individuals with disabilities affected by Hurricane Katrina or Hurricane Rita.
