Statement by the Vice President on the Death of Cecile Richards

Cecile Richards was a fighter and a force to be reckoned with. She descended from another trailblazer — Ann Richards, the first and only woman Governor of the State of Texas.

Cecile led with heart, fearlessness, and courage on the frontlines of the fight for women's rights and the dignity of every woman to make decisions about their own body. She fought tirelessly on behalf of all women, and today millions across the nation benefit from her work.

She was also a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.

Today, Doug and I are thinking of Kirk, Hannah, Daniel, and especially Lily, who I worked closely with and who embodies her mother's spirit in every way.

I have known Cecile for decades and have stood shoulder to shoulder with her in many battles. What I know to be true is that in this moment, she would want us to honor her by rededicating ourselves to the fight for fundamental freedoms. Let us roll up our sleeves and make her proud.
