United States International Trade Commission Nomination of Gardner Patterson To Be a Member.

The President today announced that he will nominate Gardner Patterson, of Washington, D.C., to be a member of the U.S. International Trade Commission for a term expiring in 1981. Patterson has been a senior adviser to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and a consultant to the World Bank since earlier this year. He was Assistant Director General, then Deputy Director General, of GATT from 1966 to 1980.

He was born May 13, 1916, in Burt, Iowa. He received a B.A. (1938) and M.A. (1939) from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University in 1942.

From 1942 to 1946, Patterson served in economic intelligence with the U.S. Treasury Department and U.S. Navy. From 1946 to 1948, he was a member of the International Currency Committee in Athens, Greece. In 1948-49 he was a professor of economics at the University of Michigan.

From 1949 to 1969, Patterson was a professor of economics at Princeton University. In 1955 and 1956 he also served as economic adviser to the State Department in Ankara, Turkey. He served as head of the economic mission at the State Department in 1961 and as an economic adviser to the State Department in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1963.

Note: On the same day, the President announced that he will withdraw the nomination of Robert Baldwin to be a member of the U.S. International Trade Commission, at Mr. Baldwin's request. Mr. Baldwin was nominated for this position on November 30, 1979.
