VP travel pool #6: remarks The VP began her remarks at 1:40 and spoke for 10 minutes. During her speech, just as other speakers have had to do, Harris had to pause as the Blue Angels loudly flew over City Hall. "Dianne Feinstein was an icon of California. She was an American patriot, a giant of the Senate, and a dear friend to Doug and me. She was also a student of history, a gifted—and I will add, very generous—artist" "She was recognized around the world as a leader, a standard-bearer of America and of American values." "Of course to Katherine and Eileen, she held perhaps the most important titles of all — mother and grandmother." "As a public servant, Dianne had the courage to take on many tough fights, even when she was faced with fierce opposition or political peril, and especially when it was in defense of the Constitution and the security of the American people." Harris said some of her fondest moments with Feinstein were working with her in a secure room in the U.S. Senate where the Senate Intelligence Committee would meet. Harris reminisced to the time when California became the first state to elect two female senators in 1992. Harris had been a prosecutor in Alameda County at the time. |
