September 24, 1951

Mr. Prime Minister:

It is a very great pleasure to welcome you to the United States of America. I hope you will have a most pleasant visit while you are here, and I know there are a great many things of importance about which we want to talk. You have plenty of opportunity to do that.

Note: The President spoke at 9:15 a.m. Prime Minister Alcide De Gasperi responded as follows:

"I thank you, Mr. President, for your cordial welcome. I am certain we will discuss matters for common defense, for peace, and regarding the interests of both our countries--America and Italy."
