Department of Commerce Nomination of Luther H. Hodges, Jr., To Be Under Secretary.

The President today announced that he will nominate Luther H. Hodges, Jr., of Charlotte, N.C., to be Under Secretary of Commerce. He would replace Sidney Harman, resigned.

Hodges is a professor of management at the Graduate School of Business Administration of Duke University.

He was born November 19, 1936, in Eden, N.C. He received an A.B. in economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1957, and an M.B.A. from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration in 1961.

From 1961 to 1962, Hodges was a research associate and instructor of corporate finance at the School of Business Administration of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. From 1962 to 1977, he was with the North Carolina National Bank, serving as chairman of the board and member of the executive committee from 1974 to 1977. In 1977 and 1978, he was the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate. Since 1978 he has been at Duke University.

Hodges is a director of the Research Triangle Foundation of North Carolina and a former director of the Business Foundation of North Carolina. He is former chairman of the North Carolina Manpower Council.
