The President today announced that he will nominate Robert Joseph Brown, of Bethesda, Md., to be a member of the National Mediation Board for a term expiring July 1, 1982. He would replace David Stowe, whose term has expired.
Brown has been Under Secretary of Labor since 1977.
He was born September 10, 1929, in Seattle, Wash. He received an A.A. from the University of Minnesota in 1951.
From 1948 to 1954, Brown was a spinner with the Donaldson Co. in St. Paul, Minn., and served as president of United Auto Workers Local 41 in St. Paul. In 1952 and 1954, he was education representative of the Minnesota State CIO.
From 1955 to 1957, Brown worked for the State of Minnesota, writing manuals and reports. From 1957 to 1963, he was a personnel officer for the State, and from 1963 to 1965, he served as deputy commissioner of conservation for Minnesota. From 1965 to 1966, he was commissioner of employment security for the State of Minnesota.
Brown was Associate Manpower Administrator for the U.S. Department of Labor from 1966 to 1974. From 1974 to 1977, he was Regional Administrator for the Labor Department in Denver, Colo.
