Nomination of John J. Maresca To Be Special Cyprus Coordinator

The President today announced his intention to nominate John J. Maresca, of Connecticut, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Minister-Counselor, for the rank of Ambassador during his tenure of service as Special Cyprus Coordinator.

Ambassador Maresca has served as Chairman of the U.S. Delegation to the Negotiations on Confidence and Security-Building Measures, 1989 to the present. Prior to this, he served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, 1986 - 88. From 1985 to 1986, he was a visiting fellow at the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. Ambassador Maresca has also served in several other positions with the State Department, including Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Paris, France, 1982 - 85; Director of the Office of Western European Affairs, 1980 - 82; and Deputy Political Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Paris, France, 1977 - 80.

Ambassador Maresca graduated from Yale University (B.A., 1959). He was born December 9, 1937, in Stresa, Italy. He also served in the U.S. Navy, 1959 - 65. Ambassador Maresca is married, has one child, and resides in Chevy Chase, MD.
