Appointment of Andrew M. Carpendale as Deputy Assistant to the President for Policy Planning, Development, and Speechwriting

The President today announced the appointment of Andrew M. Carpendale as Deputy Assistant to the President for Policy Planning, Development, and Speechwriting.

Since June 1992, Mr. Carpendale has served as Deputy Director (Designate) on the State Department's Policy Planning Staff. He oversaw planning staff work on Western and Eastern Europe, Russia, and Eurasia, as well as political-military issues and arms control. From May 1990 to May 1992, he was Director of Speechwriting and Senior Adviser for Russian and Eurasian Affairs, Policy Planning Staff, Department of State. His duties included overseeing speechwriting for the Secretary of State as well as advising the Director of Policy Planning on issues related to Russian and Eurasian affairs. From January 1989 to April 1990, he was Special Assistant to the Director of Policy Planning.

As an undergraduate, Mr. Carpendale studied at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the London School of Economics, receiving his bachelor's degree in June 1984 from the University of California in political science and economics. He received his master's degree from the University of California, Berkeley, in December 1986. He currently resides in the District of Columbia.
